But the question I had when reading Katie's story is why did Susan kill her niece? I did not find the answer in the play, and it was only when I found out that Susan was supposed to be giving her husband a birthday present that I understood why. In the same way that her husband was trying to control her life, Susan was trying to control her, to shape the outcome of the situation. Like him, she tried to cover up what was really going on.
The rest of the play is a harrowing account of how Katie's body was discovered in the basement in the fall of 2007, showing the local authorities and Jerry Sandusky in a light she did not want to be seen in. Six months later, the Jacobses were charged with her death. Susan was arrested in 2011 and charged with Katie's murder. She pleaded guilty to manslaughter and testified against her husband, who was eventually sentenced to 40 to 60 years in prison. While Katie was primarily a victim of a sick pedophile, she became a part of this story as much as any of us. She was the girl who was abducted on the day of her eleventh birthday, the one who had finally been found. The one with the necklace ripped from her neck.
The play did a good job of showing that while the attempted cover up was heartless and at times disgusting, the real monster was not only Jerry Sandusky but Susan Jacobs as well, and that the story of Katie's life was about more than one sick pedophile running free, about why the system failed to protect her, and about how we as a society failed to do our job as parents and guardians. The lesson here is that we must be vigilant not only in protecting our children from pedophiles but in protecting our children from anyone who tries to control them, from anyone who tries to take away their liberty to live their lives. The hope is that we remember, the better to protect those who cannot protect themselves.
As the audience is watching Li'l Bit's final scene, it is revealed that she has been kidnapped. She has been transported from 1965 to 1962, as the news anchor, Shana Reynolds, announces a major story: an attempted abduction of a 15-year-old girl. She later says that she has been taken to the beach house of her kidnapper. The kidnapper tries to rape her, but the girl defies him, and he kills her. The show ends with Jeremy running to the car, where his mother is being arrested. 827ec27edc
