Now, you have two choices on what to upgrade next. Once you've upgraded enough to make a portal, you have a choice of what to do. If you've got the money, you can upgrade the Batallion/Maniple/Pikeman/Cavalry, depending on what your army is at the moment of the portal's activation. You can also upgrade the Catapults, but be sure to have either the Wall/Tower, or the Rock/Barrack, or the Wooden Stable, or all three, in use. If your catapults are up, upgrade them as soon as possible. If not, wait until you have the money. If you don't have the money, you should be able to keep leveling your maniple until it gets to the 10th level (you may have to level it with 10 Niantic fodders if you don't have enough of the good stuff), and then just keep upgrading your pikemen until you get to the 10th level, and then buy the Catapult. If you don't have the money and don't want to wait, it's up to you; you can upgrade the batallions, just not the Maniple/Pikeman/Cavalry. In this case, you should get as close to the 10th level as you can and just buy the rest. At this point, you can either ignore the rest, or take the money and upgrade your catapults, and then the rest of your maniple/pikemen can be upgraded with the money you got from the catapults.
As the game progresses, you will actually start to have armies that are around the 10th level, and on around the 12th level. With careful planning, you can get all of your maniple/pikeman/cavalry/catapults to the 10th level and still have enough money to upgrade the rest. There is a limit on how many workers you can have, and your army will start to use the same number of workers to produce troops as it does to produce catapults. If you want, you can start to upgrade your Maniple/Pikeman/Cavalry once you reach the 10th level, and it will cost the same as the Catapults.
Remember to get at least three farms as soon as possible, so you can make bread for your stomach. If you need a farm to be able to afford to be able to do the build quickly, you can get that farm now and upgrade it later as needed. Just make sure not to get into a position where you can't afford the time to go to the farm.
Pros: This build works really well vs. enemy catapults. Also, many enemies will be hesitant to attack you while you have a force of archers outside of the city walls.
